After the Soviet invasion of Afghanistan in 1979 the city served as a political center for anti-Soviet Mujahideen, and became home to tens of thousands of displaced Afghans fleeing the war. Peshawar managed to assimilate many of the Pashtun Afghan refugees, while many other Afghan refugees remained in camps awaiting return to Afghanistan.
